Mini reveals new Coupe details

Mini has announced its new Coupe will come in four different variants, from a standard Cooper up to a blisteringly quick John Cooper Works model.

There will be no entry-level version as the range starts with the Cooper, with its 120bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine, and goes up to the 208bhp turbocharged JCW.

The coupe, which is the first two-seater in Mini’s range, also comes with two Cooper S options – petrol and diesel.

The fastest of the lot, the John Cooper Works, gets to 62mph in 6.4 seconds, making it marginally quicker than the hatchback version with the same engine. The Cooper S is not much slower, managing the dash in 6.9 seconds, while the SD takes 7.9 seconds.

Despite the looks are drastically different compared to the Mini hatchback, the coupe is almost exactly the same size as its more conventional version with the coupe only 5mm longer.

The loss of two rear seats means that there is a more generous storage area in the rear, with an “extended stowage and loading capacity behind the driver and passenger seats” and a large through-loading facility into the passenger compartment. It also comes with a very high-opening bootlid.

The Cooper SD is the cleanest in terms of CO2 of the range, with emissions down at 114g/km and fuel economy of 65.7mpg. The Cooper and Cooper S manage 127g/km and 52.3mpg and 136g/km and 48.7mpg respectively.
