The Basics of Online Computer Shopping

:: Online computer shopping can be overwhelming. With so many options nowadays between netbooks, laptops and desktops, PC versus Mac, and all the different parts and accessories, your head may be spinning. But if you have an idea of all the basics before you dive in, you’ll be better equipped to make an informed decision.

The first decision you need to make is PC or Mac. A lot of this is just user preference. Everyone has their reasons why they think one is better than another. Figure out which interface is easier for you, what applications you like better and how much you are looking to spend. Macs in general are pricier than a Windows PC.

Once you’ve decided what platform you want, then you need to break down whether you want a laptop, desktop, or netbook. Your online computer store should have an option of all three if it has anywhere near a good selection. A desktop is your go-to choice if you want something for the home. It’s going to overall handle more memory, you can easily upgrade and exchange parts, and over all it’s good for families or someone who wants a computer that’s going to be able to run everything they need to.

A laptop works for the home and on the go, usually has a up to date graphics card at the time of purchase (but you cannot upgrade in the future) and has it’s DVD drive for any programs or games you may want to install and use.

A netbook is a tinier version of a laptop, with just the basics you need to get work done on the go. Usually just a couple of pounds, they are low on memory and graphics but you can get any typing and internet surfing done. This is great for the business man or woman on the go who doesn’t want to lug a laptop around.

Two of the most important things to then look at is internal memory and the processor. The internal memory is going to tell you how much space you have to install and run programs, save files and other media. The processor tells you how much processing power your computer has and essentially how fast it can run and how much it can handle at once.

Remember that every online computer store has customer service of some kind, whether through email or over the phone or live chat. Never hesitate to ask for help reading specs or suggestions on what model would be best for your needs.

Chevrolet Orlando Front Three Quarters View

2012 Chevrolet Spark

On sale: Early 2011

Ostensibly a Delta-platform Cruze wagon, the Orlando will take on the Mazda5 microvan, offering three-row seating for seven. It may replace the HHR, and we hope it gets that trucklet’s engines, as the Cruze’s 1.4 turbo will likely be overwhelmed by this rig.

Chevrolet Future Car Plans

On sale: Early 2011This perky minicar arrives here in early 2011. Upright bodywork affords reasonable space for four six-footers, and its 1.2-liter 81-horse, 82-lb-ft four promises 40-mpg highway economy, though at a cost of noisy, slow performance (on early Euro-market examples). The styling is so expressive inside and out-from headlamps that stretch from grille to A-pillar (they’re bigger than the wheels!), to cool swathes of body-color on the doors and dash echoed by accents in the fabric seat inserts, to a motorcycle-style speedometer and digital tach and display that move up and down with the column-make the Spark seem more special than its minicar dimensions might otherwise suggest.

2012 Chevrolet Aveo

On sale: Mid/late 2011Imagine a turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injected Aveo RS competing equitably with a VW GTI or Mazdaspeed3. The next-gen Aveo will make it happen. Aggressive Evo-esque quad headlamps, speed-suggestive sculpted styling, cool interior trim and full connectivity with personal electronics should make Aveo appealing to youthful enthusiasts even with its more pedestrian engine offerings. The new Aveo is expected to start production in late 2010 in Michigan, and a near production spec model is on the schedule for the 2010 Detroit show.

Japan’s Earthquake and Tsunami Hit Parts Supplies

Japan's Earthquake and Tsunami Hit Parts Supplies

Lexus Ct 200H Front Three QuarterMany key auto suppliers operate north of Tokyo, in the area most affected by the tsunami. Most auto assembly takes place south of Tokyo, an area unaffected by the tsunami. But many of the plants in the south suffered electrical power disruptions, and both Japanese domestic and the Japanese plants operated in North America started feeling the effects of parts supply shortages. Here’s the latest as of presstime:

The major Japanese automakers were forthcoming with factory closures and openings, which happened on a daily basis for weeks following the quake. While GM didn’t exactly go public with its plans for backup suppliers, it quietly made plans while Ford Motor and Chrysler LLC were waiting, in a display of the kind of foresight that would have saved GM had it planned for $140-plus per barrel oil back in 2008.

Japan's Earthquake and Tsunami Hit Parts Supplies

Seventeen days after the earthquake, Toyota resumed Prius production at its Tsutsumi plant and Lexus CT 200h/HS 250h production at its Kyushu plant. The company hoped to reopen other Japanese factories shortly thereafter. At the same time, Toyota warned there will be disruption in North American factories. The company said it cannot predict which factories or models will be affected.

Five of Nissan’s six domestic plants were running again by the end of March. The sixth is Nissan’s Iwaki engine factory in northeast Japan, which supplies V-6s for Infiniti and the Nissan Murano. North American plants were preparing for the possibility of finding new sources for some components made in Japan. Nissan builds 70 percent of what it sells here in North America, and those vehicles have 95-percent parts localization. The automaker had healthy 50-day supplies of both Nissans and Infinitis, and a ship carrying about 600 Leafs left Japan on March 10. Another 1,500 Leafs were sitting at the Japanese port, which Nissan said could cause a “momentary blip” in deliveries.
